ACER V3-571G FAILS TO DETECT SSD AFTER BIOS UPDATE

I decided to install Win 8.1 so I needed to upgrade my BIOS in order to use UEFI. I downloaded the oldest of the three drivers for my laptop so that I could install them all by one starting from the oldest. The only way that I could do that is in windows mode and so I did, but unfortunately after the reboot the bios couldn't detect my SSD which the OS is installed on and I cannot boot my Windows. It only detects my other HD. What should I do and how? I am currently trying to install it from USB flash driver, but making the Flash drive bootble is the only thing I could do. There isn't any information on the web for DOS based installation of these drivers for my laptop model...

SSD not recognised, do you mean it doesn't appear on sata connections?

It doesn't appear in the boot priority list. Only the usual HD does. And I cannot boot the OS.

That happened after I tried to update the BIOS. Before that it was alright so I am sure it is the driver.

you need to check on BIOS, not boot priority list, but on SATA available devices.

your notebook had windows 8 as default OS?

it looks like an "advanced" tab is missing where you can choose the HDD/SSD to use as main boot.

by the way you have 1.13 BIOS version and you can't flash the UEFI 2.x version, since 2.x BIOS is only for notebook with windows 8 from factory.

if you tried to flash 2.x over 1.13, that's why you have this problem now.....

The BIOS version I was trying to install was 1.13. I was and still am with Windows 7 64bit. Everything was fine before the update to 1.13. After the restart it couldn't boot and when I went to find out why in the BIOS I saw that SSD is missing from the boot options.

As far as I know I should be able to install UEFI. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to benefit from the fast boot with Windows 8.

there should be a setting like "reset to factory defaults" or "load optimal defaults" on BIOS exit menu, try to load this and save.

then check back on BIOS if you can choose the SSD as bootable device.

I use Windows 7, not 8.1 and I do not wish to reinstall as I have important files on my desktop right now, respectively on the SSD. I made a bootable flash drive with the intention to flash the bios from USB but couldnt find the right BIOS driver files to do so so I am stuck...

here a list of old BIOS, the version 1.09 has a DOS BIOS flash utility.

you can try to flash 1.13 too if you have a windows 8 USB installation media, you need to copy the .exe files on the root of the USB pen.

Boot from the USB pen and select to repair you PC, advanced options, command prompt and here go to the USB root and type the name of the .exe file

Thanks, I'll give it a try. My previous version was 1.10. I hope that it will be ok to downgrade to 1.09.

I'm not aware but from what I understand in order to install UEFI I need a windows 8 installation USB/DVD?

UPDATE: I just downgraded to 1.09. Still the same. I don't get it.

1. Download the BIOS install file 1.13

2. On a Windows 8 machine that works - search for "Create a Recovery Drive" and run that on a USB drive or prepare an USB bootable windows 8 media installation

3. Copy the file from #1 to the USB drive

4. In the Acer BIOS (hit F2 while booting), Change to Legacy Boot method if available

5. Save and Exit

6. Go back into the BIOS and move the USB HDD option as the first Boot Device

7. Save and Exit

8. You should end up in a Windows 8 recover console or on windows 8 installation media, choose to repair your PC

9. Go to Advanced Options - find the option that gets you to the command prompt

10. from there go to to d: drive and found the flashable xxxxx.exe file - run it by typing the file name when you are in the folder

When I try to run the file it says: "The subsystem needed to support the image type is not present.".

I found that in a forum: "What has happened is the bios update has reset the hard drive order in your machine. Looks like you have 2 internals and an external 1.5TB drive? The boot drive should be the SSD? If so carefully remove the sata cable to the 320 gb drive and unplug the external drive. Ensure the SSD boot drive is plugged into the first SATA port (sometimes 0 or 1) . Go into your bios and under boot order hard drives make sure you can see SSD at the top of the list. Then save that configuration and run start up repair. Once the repair is completed, may take a time or two reconnect the other drive. That should be it as long as there is no further damage."

I hope that this is not my case but it makes sense... And that would be bad because I still have warranty and the guys at the repairs tend to keep the laptops for about a month or so... Perfect timing to ruin my system. Smiley Happy

UPDATE:

I was able to boot from the SSD using Hirens Boot CD. There is an option to boot Windows from the HDD and it did the trick I don't know how. Still I don't have any idea how to fix that.

1. My intention in the first place was to upgrade the BIOS to UEFI so that I could use the fast boot.

2. Upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 8.

Still there is a problem...

I find the 'not be able to upgrade Bios from 1x to 2x' [word filter avoidance]

Everyone should be able to use UEFI. I don't see how customers with equal notebooks can't receive equal upgrades. Can this procedure be performed in an official service for Acer?
