Microsoft Update service not running

Acer Aspire 7739, Win7, 64-bit.

Microsoft Update returns an error that the update service is not running.

I check the services, and see that it is running.

I downloaded the SATA drivers (Rapid Storage Technology, I think).

The setup returns an error not found in the ini file??

How can I get the Microsoft Update running again?

Thank's, , ,

    hi..

Click Start, and then click Run.

In the Open box, type cmd, and then press Enter.

At the command prompt, type the following commands, and press Enter after each command:

    net start bits

    net start wuauserv

net start bits - System error 5 has occured. Access denied.

net start wuauserv - Requested service has already been started.

Windows Update Trouble Shooter - Returned 1 error.

    - Source registration is missing or corrupt - Fixed

    Defragged C:

Ran Update Trouble Shooter a second time, , ,

    - Reading hardware ID from ini file failed - Fixed

Tried Win Update again, , , Got the same message that the service is not running, , , (yes it is).

    Ran the Windows Update Agent.

    3 days of headach, , , Success!

    Windows Update now works again.

From my previous studying I thought it might have been the SATA drivers that gave me the error

"Reading hardware ID from ini file failed"

    I was wrong, , ,

The fix seems to be a combination of runniing the Update Trouble Shooter first, then followed by the Windows Update Agent.

Thanks Sharanji for getting me started in the right direction.
