Acer AL2216W on cold boot enters reboot cycle. Successful boot after 3 - 5 power cycles.

On coldboots, my monitor will turn on, display the Acer logo, go dark, then recycle itself back to the Acer log. It will complete this 6 - 15 times or so then go completely dark as if its asleep from no signal. I will either unplug the thunderbolt -> DVI cable from my macbook and plug it back in which causes the cycle again until it goes dark. I will complete this process anywhere from 2 - 5 times (sometimes more) till the monitor boots correctly.

The monitor is well outside warranty, I am a software engineer who has fixed gadgets before but I don't know where to start with a monitor? Could it be a bad capaciter that is not holding its charge and it needs time to prime back up or something?

Without examining the product, I would just be guessing. Maybe a bad inverter board, but not sure since you can see the Acer logo on the screen and sometimes get the product to come on. Your best bet would be to have the monitor serviced, or potentially just replace the monitor.

Are you sure your monitor is out of warranty? Many of our monitor products carry a 3 year warranty.

Pretty certain it is out of warranty as I received it from my neighbor when I gave them one of my older perfectly working monitors for a cheap price because this one developed this issue. I have had it probably almost a year and they had it a few years before that.

So, what you are saying is I probably just need to deal with its issues till it nolonger boots because it may not be worth the time / money to investigate the problem.

It boots pretty much every time after cycling the plug X number of times, it can just be annoying sometimes when I want to use it. I use it at my standing workstation setup with my MBP, so it is not a critical monitor.

That is pretty much what I am saying. By the time you spend money and time on parts, it may be easier to get a new monitor, since they are fairly inexpensive these days.

Hey Blayn, the monitor finally gave up. The manufacture date was from 2008, so there is no chance its still under warranty. At any rate, I opened it up and saw that it had a capacitor on the power supply board that looked like a kid who ate 60 too many Ho Ho's. There was also a little bit of some kind of residue at the base of it. I am going to attempt to replace it. Will let you know if that fixes it.
