Have an Acer Aspire S7-392. Noticed that when the laptop is powered down, a plugged in USB mouse is still powered (the red light underneath is still on). Presumably this continues to draw current from the battery. I don't the functionality of "always on" USB, and would prefer it completely off.

Can this be done?

Thanks,

Alain

In Power options/Change Advanced Power Settings make sure the USB Selective Suspend Setting is enabled.

Go to Device manager/Mice and etc./HID compliant mouse and double click it. The Properties will open and go to the Power Management tab and uncheck Allow this device to wake the computer.

NOTE: you won't be able to use the mouse to wake from sleep.

Thanks, but that doesn't work. I went Control Panel > Mouse > Hardware > HID-compliant mouse > Properties > Change settings > Power Management. I unticked the box "Allow this device  to wake the computer". Then I closed all the property pages and shut down the PC. Initially the mouse light goes off for a few seconds, but then within about 5s the red light comes on again.

Interestingly, there is a box in the abovementione property page called "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". This box is unticked and disabled (so I cannot change it). Is this relevant?

    Thanks,

    Alain

Looking around I found some motherboards supply power to USB even after shut down. I don't think you will find a way tp power off the USB mouse.Maybe put a piece of tape over the light.

Its not that the light is annoying! Its that the motherboard is clearly powering a device I don't want powered. It would be fine if there was a user setting somewhere so you could toggle the setting. As it is, if I shut down a fully charged laptop with a USB mouse (and maybe a USB pen drive with an in-built LED) I might find the battery completely flat after a few days!

I checked the BIOS on the laptop this morning and there is nothing in there about always on USB. In fact, the BIOS is remarkably sparse compared with previous computers I've had.

If there is no way to turn this off, then I have no choise but to live with it and just learn to unplug USB devices...but its a little disappointing.

    Thanks for the response.

Take a look at this where IronFly talks about disabling Fast Boot and the poster's reply.
