Have Extensa 4420. Been unable to restore old Vista OS so decided to move up to Win 7 32 bit.

Started the install from DVD but got error message that I could not install on the system partition as it was "reserved" by Acer.

This is half of the HDD.

What is the fix for this ?

Are you sure you were trying to install to the C: partition and not the Recovery partition? The partition you want to install to will be the largest partition.Did you even get to where Windows asks you where to install?

No. Since the Acer recovery software is defective it just got as far as creating a corrupt Registry.

Acer could care less about their defective software and their proprietary "recovery" system not working. I ended up erasing the hard drive and installing non-Acer software. So far performance is faster, Storage space is significantly larger and the system actually works unlike with Acer software.

Obviously I will not buy another Acer computer and in my computer classes I will advise against others getting defective software..

When recoveries get messed up in any brand it can get tricky and sometimes weird. I'm glad you got your laptop usable again.
