Broken hard drive

I have an Aspire 3820T-7459 laptop with a broken (?) hard drive that I would like to replace/upgrade (I love this little laptop). It has/had a WD 320gig Blue 2.5" drive as the OE and I would like to upgrade to a larger WD 750gig blue drive. I have no idea what broke , as the computer guru I use was vague..... Will it be compatible? I believe the sata connections are just the same and therefore it will plug right in. The problem is : will it work? Anyone have any knowledge of my problem or something similar. I think, not knowing much, the main problem would be the bios not recognizing the hard drive because of it's size? But I thought perhaps the same manufacturer and the same model would somehow be recognized.

I think it will fit but please check dimensions, the 750gb can be a little more thick and you can have some problem to fit in the slot.

Hi there.

Yes, you can change your hard drive with a WD Blue 750GB, but you must get a 2.5 inch one.

My Thanks to all of you for the help. I went with the one my friend had (WD7500LPCX) it's thinner (7.0mm), but my friend, who is more knowledgable than I, said it wouldn't be a problem. She was right and it plugs right in and is recognized in the bios. So problem solved and I just learned alot of new stuff. Now, moving right along..... does anyone know how to recover the data from a broken hard drive, or even how to tell what is wrong with it???

Recovering data from a broken drive would require different approaches for different cases. It really depends on exactly how broken is the HDD. In general taking it to a data recovery company/specialist would give the best results. In most cases if the drive is physically damaged data recovery services might be the only option. You can tell that there is such kind of damage if the HDD/laptop has been dropped before it stopped working or if the drive is making unusual noises. But it could be a problem caused by a bad partition or something else that could be fixed with software tools. It really depends on the particular case.
