I replaced hard drive on my Aspire M3910 desktop (the original one no longer worked). I used original back up DVDs I created on original purchase. It said the installation was successful but upon booting up I get this error message " Windows could not complete the installation. To install windows on this computer, restart the installation" I restart several times and will not load windows. Any quick advice for me asap? Thank you ahead of time Smiley Happy

    try this:

When prompted with error unable to complete installation:

Hit SHIFT-F10 to bring up command prompt.

    type MMC

    Click File -> Add/Remove Snap-in... (Or CTRL+M)

Select Computer Management (Double click and Finish on Local Computer)

    Click OK

Double click Computer Management (Local) -> System Tools -> Local Users and Groups -> Users -> Double Click Administrator -> Uncheck Account is disabled -> OK

Now right click Administrator -> Set Password...  ->  Set a decent password to get started.

Now, restart.  Should be good to go.

If this doesn't work try next step:

SHIFT-F10 to bring up command prompt.

    type:  CD C:\windows\system32\oobe

    type msoobe

    enter

Make a generic account and password.  hit finish (if it requests a product key and you have one, enter it now.  if OEM/No key required, just finish).  Set time/date.  Finish.

    Restart.

    Should be good to go.

    I'm not an Acer employee.

I do wonder if you did make sure the NEW HDD was formatted, many new HDD are not initialized, there for they can not be FORMATTED, by the install media.... that would be the first thing I would do,, open with another Computer, set Initialize, then Format with the proper settings. then reinsert into your computer and Restore with your media.

I am still persueing your first option, everything went fine until I reached System Tools. It did not provide the option of local users groups The choices were , task scheduler, event viewer, shared folders, performance and device manager. It is windows 7 home edition if this helps. Could it fix it with just the first options selected as it asks if I would like to keep changes to console 1. As for second option if all the above doesn't work, I don't have a product key just a recovery DVD Thank you for further assistance appreciated! Smiley Happy

I did not format the HD to start and that could be the issue. The online help I found did not suggest that ughh! I do not know how to hook my hard drive to another computer to format. I only have access to laptops. Is there an online tool software tool I can download to boot a format from DVD?

I use a small adapter that cost about 17.00 to check any HDD desktop 3.5" or 2.5" http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2055119.m570.l1313&_nkw=hdd+adapter+&_sacat=0 I use all the time, infact I have 2 just in case.... and yes your laptop will work perfect... you can also try 1) While in command prompt, type in 'diskpart'. 2) Then type in 'list disk' and take note of 'Disk n' where n is a number. 3) Now type in 'select disk n'. 4) After doing so, type in 'list partition' and take note of 'Partition n' where n is a number. 5) Then type 'select partition n'. 6) Last but not least type 'active' and hit enter to activate the partition.

you plug in the HDD to the adapter, then you plug the power adapter in and attach to the HDD, then attach ti USB Cable to the Adapter and plug it in... you should hear a CHING, that the USB is seen, if you can not see the HDD now, in your list, that means it need to be initalized... that can be accomplished by open Disk Management - let the module load and then you should see a new HDD that shows - select it and initialize it, next format it, next set it to Active..... now you should be able to see in as a External HDD - select eject the HDD or USB Device. unplug all the cables, put your adapter up. then insert the HDD into you Computer and follow the Restore, the RESTORE Program will Format as it needs, set all partitons as needed and install your OS... it then will/should auto reboot into the HDD and you will see almost exactly as the Factory Sent.... just follow all instructions.. like when it was NEW

if you use Diskpart just follow the instructions. since you only have 1 HDD then really hard to MESS things up.

so I typed in "diskpart" and then "list disk" It provides the following information: Disk 0 Online 937 gb Disk 1 No media Disk 2 No media Disk 3 No media Disk 4 No media Disk 5 No media I see no mention of "Disk N" or you mean take note of the number beside it >> please clarify before I proceed thank you again

selected disk part and followed prompts and made active, that did not take away windows error message originally having, going to try the original suggestions again

your disk is Disk 0 and n was reference to Number of disk so select disk 0 that is the only DISK you have installed and that represents a 1TB.

You should then BOOT to BIOS, and select an set the DVD or your Media Drive as 1st then HDD as #2 - boot sequence. make sure you SAVE that... then insert the media in DVD or USB which ever your media is.... then reboot it will auot selected DVD or USB which ever you selected, then install Windows , if that does not WORK then your MEDIA is Corrupt, if DVD then seggest you do a CLEAN of the DVD, since any dust, lint can cause errors... I have also found that NEVER REMOVE THE MEDIA until after THE RECOVERY is 100% complete and it Auto REBOOTS....

If your media is bad, and if you have the COA -key to install and Active, then DL a new ISO and burn it, also check Validate after you burn ... if on DVD.
