Migration HDD to SSD

Hello,

I want to migrate the HDD of my Acer Aspire S3-392G to a SSD (Crucial M550).

All I have to do is to make a recovery USB stick following these steps ?

Use the following steps to create your backup drive:

  1. Press the Windows (Image: icon_Windows8_key.png) key + Q.
  2. Type Recovery, and click Acer Recovery Management.
  3. Click Create Factory Default Backup.
  4. Select Copy content from the recovery partition to the recovery drive, and click Next.
  5. Select your USB Flash Drive, and click Next.
  6. Click Create. When asked to delete the recovery partition from your computer, click No.

Then when I exchange my HDD with the SSD, it will directly reinstall the HDD image to the SSD ?

Do I have to change something in the Bios ?

thank you

They are part of the recovery system.Put that HDD away safe and if something happens to your current drive you can put the old one back in and you'll be back up or put the old one back in now and make a recovery DVD.

  • I'm not sure a  Factory Default Backup saves all your personal stuff.

I did 2 ssd in laptops last week. I made backups to a external drive, put the ssd in and restored backup to ssd from the external. Booted up and O/S was activated.

    This will work: http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

Haven't done it myself, but have replaced HDDs with other HDDs. You need to make a FULL disk backup image onto a removable device like a USB HDD. You could use Macrium Reflect Free or Aomei Backupper. Then install the SSD and restore the image to it. This effectively clones the disk.

Or can get a USB to SATA cable and attach the SSD to it and clone directly.

I cannot directly clone the HDD as the SSD I want to install is smaller.

My HDD contains 5 partitions (C:\ and 4 other, backup partitions or whatever).

I'll try with the "acer backup" tool and if it doesn't work with easeustodobackup or macronis.

thank you for the answers. Man Wink

Ok, I just made a clone of 3 out of 5 partition of the HDD on the SSD, put the SSD in the laptop and it works.

I don't know what is on the 2 partitions I could not clone (maybe a backup partiton ?)

Does someone know why there are originally 5 partitions ?

    Ok thank you.

I already made a recovery USB stick before changing the hard drive.
