Check in Device Manager if any exclamation mark is present, if present double click it, go to "details" tab, from the drop down menu choose "hardwareIDs", click the first string and copy/paste here.

    please write also:

This is a pretty standard behavior. Under Vista / 7 / 8 / 8.1 right click on the speaker icon on your desktop and select recording devices. Check to see that your microphone input is enabled and active. If you see a built in microphone and also the microphone jack, make sure its enabled under default.

there is no exclamation marks on any of them and i tried the other method, it starts working for a bit then just randomly cuts off. it just randomly decides when it wants to work

Do you have another unit you can try the headset on ? Are you sure the proper driver is loaded? Checked to see that you have the latest update from the Acer site?

ive tried all the other ports but it just worse, like a beeping noise and static occurs which overlaps my voice. i have considered that the ports are dodgy as some of them are a bit loose

Install those drivers then connect your headphones and try microphone:

Your headset has an USB, so it's like a proper USB audio card, that's why it appears under "sounds" on device manager.
