I bought an ACER TimelineX 3830TG from an ad on my local classified ads site (usedcowichan) and when I was researching the computers specs I saw that it has the ability to have a smartcard reader installed on it. There is a removable cover ont the bottom panel and there are all the contacts & mountig points for installing one to it. I very very very much want to buy the module and if I can get the part shipped to me somehow install it myself. I fix and repair laptops, desktops, and mobile devices for a living and to be honest I normally wouldn't buy a system that didn't have a 15.6 LCD but due to the simcard reader that it can have I bought it regardless.
I have been drooling about getting one for it and whinging at being unable to find one or if I even can get the exact one for my laptop (huawei 3g module there are two different models you can get apparently) I would like to get the correct one. Failing that I would like to get a technical drawing (aka schematic diagram) that lists the pinout for the modules contact points on the motherboard. So that should I choose to take the risk of soldering on a simcard reader (or reader/writer would be even better) to the board instead of just getting a USB based module.
I like the challenge and love to do this type of work myself rather than pay someone else to have all the fun. I am more than capable of doing this type of work and have the experience with electronics that I would need in order to do a worthy job and not damage anything in the attempt. You use a hammer and nails to attach it right? and a skill saw to cut the holes you need. See I know what I am doing.
