Acer P186H monitor dimensions are wrong. "Input not supported"

I have googled for almost two hours for help. I have tried all the tricks and nothing is helping. This is the third time my monitor has done this in the last 6 months. The other two times I was able to fix it by just unplugging the monitor from the computer, waiting 30 seconds and then plugging it back in and turning the computer back on.

My monitor was just fine last night. I turned the computer on from it's sleep state this morning and the resolution was all wrong. When I attempt to restore it to what it should be 2048x1536 I believe, "input not supported" shows on the screen and it just remains at what it's set now which is 1024x768. The monitor is only about 3 years old. I have not installed or made any changes to anything prior. It uses a VGA connection. The computer connected to it is an Acer Aspire XC-603G with 8GB of ram (7.89 usable), 64 bit operating system. It has an Intel Pentium CPU @ 2.41GHz

I have tried going to the Acer support website to see if it was a driver issue but the only operating systems I see are XP, Windows 7 and Vista. I am running Windows 8.1 so there doesn't even appear to be new drivers for it.

I restarted the computer, restored to an earlier point, turned the computer off and unplugged the monitor for 30 seconds then restarted, I turned the computer off and unplugged everything for 5 minutes and restarted...no luck.

What else can I try??

i will check the VGA cable and try another LCD monitor just to check if graphic card is working.

Hello Amanda416,

I checked the maxi resolution of your monitor:

- In the manual, it's WXGA 1366x768 60 Hz

- In the driver, HKR,,MaxResolution,,"1366,768"

When I attempt to set it to those dimensions, this is the notice I'm shown. Not to mention it is very smushed looking.

@Amanda416: Do you have a LCD or LED TV?

We don't see the picture immediatly because it must be accepted by a moderator.

Amanda46, you must check also the refresh frequency, probably must be set to 60hz, it's why you have a bad quality.

Well it's a pop up notice that says....

"Optimal Resolution Notification

This is not the optimal screen resolution for the primary display device. The optimal resolution is 2048x1536. Click the notification for more information. "

I have always kept it at that resolution so I'm not sure why it's an issue now.

I have checked that as well Ironfly. It is 60GHz.

I do have a spare 32 inch lcd tv. But I am not sure how to hook it up to the computer?

For sure a weird issue, i can't find anything confirming the 2048x1536 resolution as supported.

Your graphic card and P186H have DVI ports?

On the VGA port, symbol double rectangle or HDMI input.

Ok I figured out how to hook up the 32 inch TV. Aside from the fact that it is HUGE lol everything appears correct and normal proportions. So was the other monitor just going out?

If your graphic card and P186H support DVI ports, i will try to use DVI cable, way better quality and less trouble setting the correct resolution.

I really have no clue about the graphic card but no, there is only a power and VGA section on the bottom of the Acer monitor.

Darn. I was afraid of that. I am using the VGA with this TV and it works great. So with the new monitor, I should make sure it has a DVI port and not just the VGA?
