Aspire S7 391 touchpad malfunctioning when set down on flat surface

I haven't seen this specific issue pop up despite the myriad of problems people has been describing with the touchpad in Windows 8.1.

My touchpad behaves sluggishly or not at all when the laptop is set down on a flat surface such as a table or desk. Sitting on my lap it operates just fine. I've attempted to adjust sensitivity which doesn't affect the issue. Also updated to current drivers.

I started using the machine new out of the box and the issue appeared very recently after installing 8.1. The housing doesn't appear bent or disfigured. Wondering if it could be some sort of magnetic issue, or if there are some sort of proximity sensors causing the problem?

If it does this everytime you sit it on a flat surface, you should probably call Acer and see if they can repair the system. Does not really seem like a setting to me.
