Aspire E1-570 - Linux stopped hibernating or suspending after BIOS upgrade

Hi all, my 1st post here!

I have updated from Windows 8 to 8.1, and for that I've followed the instructions on the Acer webpage. One of those instructions were to update the BIOS and I've done that.

Now the computer has BIOS version 2.06 from 2013/11/11.

After this, Linux Mint stopped suspending and hibernating. I've restored my old known to work backups, but none of them is working. I've installed several kernel versions, some of them I knew that were able to suspend and hibernate. I've installed a fresh installation and it is still not working.

So I know it is not a software but a hardware issue, most certainly caused by the BIOS upgrade.

So I can only see 2 options:

- Solve the problem on the Linux side

or

- Downgrade the BIOS version to the previous one installed.

I have no idea of the version it had, this laptop is 3 months old.

Does anyone have a clue on how to fix this?

Hi, and thank you so much for your reply!

Regarding logs for the BIOS update through Windows, as far as I remember, the BIOS update tool was an exe and I've deleted it after use. There were no errors on the screen nor anything unusual during the reboots and the update.

Then with the upgrade to Windows 8.1, the directory tree became even more chaotic with leftovers from the previous installation and I'm not sure if the BIOS update tool left any log.

Regarding linux logs, you made me win the Nobel Facepalm Prize! So this is what logs are for! Smiley Embarassed

So I've cleared them all, restarted the computer and then tried to hibernate.

Try to reinstall pmutils, hdparam and anacron. Remove this application through package management, reboot and install all again.

I have purged pm-utils (not pmutils), hdparm (not hdparam) and anacron. Rebooted, reinstalled them and rebooted again, but it didn't solve the problem.

Also, I'm not sure if I have reloaded the BIOS defaults when I've updated it. I've done it now, it didn't work either.

I don't think this is a software problem because I've already reinstalled the operating system from scratch and that didn't solve the problem. When I've installed it the first time, hibernation and suspension were working fine.

All info seems to be aiming to the firmware.

Is there any way I can contact Acer to report them about this?

How can I get my hands on the previous version of the BIOS formware? The Acer download support page only has this current one...

OK, if you completely installed your OS from scratch, this shouldn't be software related. Try to select the little box on the right side, choose "all" instead of "current". This gives you the following downloadable files for the E1-570 machine:

Please check the attached image... Is this the menu you're referring to? I can't see any little box on the right side... Or anything at all that has "all" or "current" as text...

Can you please give me detailed instructions like if I were really stupid Man Frustrated so I can get access to the download links?

MMMmmmmmm....

BIOS versions 2.00 and 2.04 gave an error. Version 2.06 was ready to flash but I didn't do it because this is what I already have.

- The battery is inserted and with 90% charge

- The computer is also connected to the mains power.

Please check the attached images. Would the software prevent a BIOS downgrade? If yes, is there any option to force it to accept older BIOS versions?

I got an email on behalf of the Acer Community asking if my problem is solved, but it isn't so far...

I cannot downgrade my BIOS as stated with printsceens on my previous message, I am only allowed to reflash the current version.

Any hint on how can I downgrade the BIOS version?

I've been thinking about the inability to downgrade the firmware version...

The Acer website considers the firmware upgrade as part of the instructions for upgrading Windows to 8.1.

So I'm wondering if Windows 8.1 might be incompatible with the prior versions of the firmware (<2.06), and that's why the firmware software is not downgrading.
