Difficulty with installing Win8.1 update

I purchased an Acer Aspire E1-510P with Windows 8.1 pre-installed from The Source two days ago. Since I purchased it I have only turned it on and off twice. I updated the OS both times using the automatic functions set to install important updates but not neccesarily the ones that are recommended but not listed as important. The first time it installed some 15 updates when I shut it down. The day after this I turned it back on, installed Firefox, Avast!, and Comodo Firewall, and downloaded 5 more Windows 8.1 updates using the automatic function. When I shut off the laptop it proceeded to install the updates, but it has now displayed "Keep your PC on until this is done. Installing update 4 of 5..." for several hours.

I realize now that the first thing I should have done was use eRecovery to create a flashdrive backup restore, but I had not done this.

After waiting 2 hours I cycled the power manually, but when it restarted it continued to display the same message. I do not have any external media with the OS on it. What potential solutions are there to this issue? Restoring the system back to the factory defaults would not be problematic for me.

I will check back on this thread periodically over the next few days.

Edit: I meant to type that it had installed some 50 Windows 8.1 updates the first time.

Generally, you should install all updates before you install any anti-virus or firewall solutions. By the way, there is really no need for a different firewall. The Microsoft firewall is very powerful, you can set easy in and out rules.

Applications that are deep integrated in the underlaying operating system are often the root cause for update failures. Especially anti-virus and firewall solutions. Uninstall this applications, reboot and do the updates. Do all updates. The classifications of updates are very often completely wrong and some system components need the latest versions.
