Travelmate Operating system

My Travelmate 4401 crashed and the recovery partition deleted. I cannot find my recovery discs which I think I have lost years ago.  I have another copy of Windows XP Professional [retail with SP2]. When I tried to re-install the operating system the COA key was reported as invalid. Does the Acer disc have some file that my retail XP is missing? Is there a specific setup file that I should have? I am using the exact same operating system as supplied with the laptop.

Actually, the restore disks that you created are made specifically for your comptuer model. There is a file on them that verifies that your are putting it on the correct comptuer and does not need a CD key for this comptuer. If you lost the disks that you made, you can see about purchacing another one at http://store.acer.com. If your serial number does not come up in the search, call the phone number on that site and talk to a live person.

Thanks but I have the drivers. Missing drivers would not cause an invalid key error, however.

Thanks, but discs are not an option on the Acer UK store. Customer Care wanted £51 for replacement discs.

Yes you need the OEM Recovery disk to ressolve the issue at this point. unfortintaly the disk are no longer sold by Acer so you may have to look into a retail copy.

I have another copy of Windows XP Professional [64-bit retail with SP2]. When I tried to re-install the operating system the COA key was reported as invalid.

Yes the COA sticker is not a "retail Key" you would need the Recovery disk to reload the OEM OS you had.

Does the Acer recovery disc have some files that my retail XP is missing? Is there a specific setupp.ini file that I should could change? Maybe I should try to get a full directory of the operating system disc so that I could compare.
