Hdd Light

Hi all.

I just purchased the Acer 7600U-UR24 all-in-one. I updated Windows 8, updated to 8.1 and updated again. All Windows updates are done. I have only installed a few programs right now, most notably Office 2003 and iTunes.

The problem I have is what I assume is the HDD light, a red light about 3 inches to the right of the camera, blinks constantly, even after shutting down the computer, not putting it to sleep. The blinking is constant, regular and rapid not irregular like when you are working and then doing nothing. I tried restarting to no avail. Today, after shutting down I went and took a shower and came back about 35 minutes later and it was still blinking. I tried unplugging the power supply from the wall and computer for a couple of minutes, but it starts blinking once I plug it all back in.

Also there is a series of 8 white flashing dashes that 'point' to the power button. Not really a button but a spot on the upper right corner of the screen that you touch to turn it on. They flash in sequence from left to right followed lastly by the power symbol flashing. This continues while the computer is off and stops when it starts up. Is this normal? It flashes all night.

I tried the chat with an Acer tech. She said it could be static buildup in the motherboard. Wanted me to unplug everything, hold down the power buttom for 15 seconds, which you can't do because there is no power button, and then put it all back together and turn it back on.

Am I missing something? I am not new to computers.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Stuart

I researched the flashing light you are inquiring about. This light is a proximity sensor that will help you easily locate the power button. If you place your hand in front of the flashing light, it should flash lights to indicate where the power button is.

There has to be a power button. and that is what you should push in an hold until the ON lite goes off... now my Acer is similar and the power button is directly behind the power lite on right hand side on the edge. below the DVD, while your DVD is on the left hand side... PS: I have no HDD lite and most of the time a lite by the Camera indicates the CAMERA is on, or in standby .... hope this helps/

My dvd is on the right side, just a slot to insert the disc, no tray that ejects.  Just below the slot is the eject button.  Other than the spot on the upper right with the power symbol, the circle with the vertical line through the top, there seems to be no other buttons on the unit.  I have looked all over this thing and can find no other way to turn on the computer other than holding my finger over the power symbol for about a second.

Talked to another tech today.  He admitted that he doesn't know what the light is.  He thinks it might have something to do with the hand gesture feature.  I did notice that when the gesture feature is turned on, there is a tiny white light about 1/4 inch to the right of the camera.  It goes out when you turn off the gesture feature.

Still baffeled.  Going to call Acer US tomorow and see if there is anyone there who knows what the light is.  It may not be the HDD light after all.

Will let you all know what I find out.

Well my u5-610 has features that are different from the manual also.. seems like maybe some new manuals need to be on line. I have UEFI that has no legacy options also, no hdd lite, and several places offered me desktop memory and hdds to upgrade, sure glad i wanted, it really is a laptop inside. memory also and HDD. so really the manual for me is rather short also... at least I was provided with a parts list, if i need to repair anything.... old retired Computer Tech. good luck

Yeah, the included manual is very generic with no diagrams. I think they use it for all the computers. Kind of lame, but the computer is nice. I agree, the all-in-ones are really just glorified laptops with limited upgradability. But it does serve my purposes well.

    Thanks Blane

I just talked to the techs in Texas this morning and they told me the same thing.  It is used to 'wake up' the touch screen so you can turn on the computer by placing your finger on the power button symbol.  The tech was kind of happy because I stumped him and he had to go to the service manuals to figure it out.

Thanks to all for your help.
