error on re-installing synaptics trackpad driver

Hello,

I uninstalled a few days ago my synaptics trackpad on an Acer 9520 (running on winXP SP3)

Since that time, I am totally unable to reinstall it. I tried various packages (from synaptics, from acer, from various third party websites), to no avail : every time, at the end of the installation, I get the message "A severe error occurred, please contact your manufacturer", or the installation seems to have worked alright, except that on rebooting, a window opens asking me various files which are already in the installation folder ("c:\program files\synaptics\synTP" ...

By browsing various forums, chats and bulletin boards, I noticed that I was not the only one suffering from that irritating problem, but u to now, I have not been able to find a working solution (even - the first one I tried - by reinstalling the original drivers thanks to the "acer empowering technology" utility and the drivers stored on the hidden restoration partition.

talking about restoration, I tried several restorations at previous times (when my trackpad was still working ok, but then again, to no avail.

Do you have the hardware listed in Device Manager?

yes indeed... but with an exclamation mark and/or the message "unknown device". But if I try to uninstall it to make a new installation, the process stalls. I even tried to totally uninstall the device (deleting from the registry all the entries with "synaptics", deleting the c:\program files\synaptics folder and files... When I reboot the computer, after loading windows, I get the message "new hardware detected" "touchpad" and a windows open asking me to load a series of files (starting with the infamous "SynTP.exe"...

I solved the problem by installing an usb touchpad (perixx peripad-501) which works perfectly well without any driver (apart the generic windows HID mouse).
