Acer Aspire 5552 not booting 90% of the time

My Acer Aspire 5552 is 2 1/2 years old, so out of warranty. It's os is windows 7. 1-2 weeks ago I started having trouble starting it. I had been using it and closed it for a few minutes, when I opened it the screen stayed black even though the power light was on. I tried turning it off, taking the battery out and unplugged it for a few minutes, put it back in and turned it on but still black. The power light comes on and the cd flashes for a few seconds then nothing. We have been able to get it started a few times since then, but there is no rhyme or reason. It is usually hours or days of being off before it comes on. And when it does come on it does so like it always did.

I did have a friend try to firgure it out and it finally came on for him and he ran a defrag and set it to restart and run some kind of scan or defrag that only runs when it is starting up. Problem is it, as usually, wouldn't restart. A few day later I finally got it to come on, but it ran that scan thing and after that it had a start up error. I clicked for it to try and fix itself a couple of times, but then I clicked for it to start normal. It did come on fully at that time. That was two days ago and I set it so that it wouldn't sleep or hibernate, because I'm afraid it will turn off.

I've seen several people have had this problem, no clear answer on here. I can't afford another computer or even much to fix this one. I don't reckon I can keep it in this state of running indefinately, but I don't know what to do. Does anyone have any suggestions.

I contacted customer support, but of course no warranty. This bothers me! Do they just make computers as disposable items? I know I can't afford $500 every couple years for a computer! And why wouldn't a company give customer support on such Expensive items. When I called for help they were going to charge me at least $99 just to talk to a tech! That is totally unacceptable!

Well, if anyone has a suggestion I would appriciate it.

Thanks,

Suzanne

Did you try reloading Windows? If it is a software problem, that should fix it. If not, it is probably a problem with the HDD or mainboard. You should be able to have Acer fix it for a flat cost, or take it to a computer shop in your area to see what they would charge.
