Unable to update Wireless Network Adapter using both device manager and manual installation

I have an Acer Aspire 3680 ZR1 running Windows Vista 32 bit. My problem started when I tried connecting to my home network. It connects to my network but it says "unidentified network with local access only. My first step was to get on the phone with AT &T tech support. They remotely accessed my laptop but were unsuccessful in fixing the problem. I also went under device manager for my network adapter (astheros 5700EG). It does show this device is working correctly so I then had windows search for updates for driver. Windows comes back and says windows has determined you have the latest(2007) version of driver already installed. I then got online and done some research and found out that in fact I do NOT have the latest version installed. I then went and downloaded the latest version(2010) to a flash drive from atheros.cz website. I then tried to install the latest version on laptop using device manager but now instead of searching online I used the browse my computer option. Once again Windows comes back and says I already have the latest version installed which is from 2007. I need help in fixing this as I don't know what to do next.

Also Acer should always have the latest driver updates on their website
