W500 recovery methods

I have browsed all the questions and replies listed and am still confused, my W500 has never given me any trouble to date, but I like to be prepared, so I had my recovery discs and the instructions on how to use them safely tucked away, then some light fingered person nabbed them and the instructions and I am unable now to find on line on any of the sites the instructions I had before. I have contacted support via email who have told me they can provide me with the discs for£60, which was also confusing as the say they will send the order form shortly but to let them know if I want the discs, I am waiting for the order form to be sent to me, if it dosn't come by Monday I will phone them. My questions are:

1. Can I use the keyboard to assist in the installation, if and when needed. I have small hands and find it difficult to reach all the buttons at the same time.

2. Can someone please tell me how step by step to do it with the keyboard.

3. In the meantime if I should need to recover will the System Image I saved when I first got the tablet get me out of trouble, I make regular back ups but have kept the first SI on a usb stick, do I need to transfer this SI to a disc or will it run from the usb stick.

Sorry for the ramble, my laptop comes with a recovery feature that makes it easy to recover the thing, press button B and away she goes, having said that I love my W500 and am prepared to jump through hoops to keep it working.

I am sorry that I could not make the infromation clear in the previous reply, I can understand how difficult this is, however there is no option to restore the tablet using the keyboard dock or plugging an external keyboard ,

The only option to restore your computer is by plugging in an external DVD drive while the tablet is turned off, insert the first disc into the DVD drive. Press the Windows key, volume up key, and power button simultaneously to turn on the system. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the recovery process.

The system image that you have created will not work, you need to use the same recovery disc that shipped with your tablet or purchased from Acer store to restore the tablet to factory settings.

You need to use the recovery disc to restore your tablet since it doesn't have an internal recovery partition.

Hi Ally,

Many thanks for your prompt reply, I have watched many times the recovery videos and read and reread the instructions to do so, I appreciate that they may be usefull for people with 2 hands but I am only able to use 1 which is why I was asking if it is possible to do the recovery using the keyboard dock, sorry if I did not make this clear, if it is not possible to do the recovery using the keyboard dock then will my other question about useing the System Image work.

Thank you for your reply, I try hard within my limitations to be as independant as possible, but I guess this is just one more thing I will have to leave to someone else, actually it also means that the instructions that I had pinched will do nobody any good, serves them right, the previous instructions if I remember correctly were.

1. Connect keyboard to tablet.

2. Connect usb disc drive to keyboard and insert disc 1.

3. Start tablet and at screen press some key or other, I can't remember which could have been F2 or F8 or some comination of function and number.

4. Follow on screen instructions etc etc.

As to the System Image that was done within windows, and I was sure that I read somewhere it was possible to restore the image within the windows backup and restore program to restore the hard drive to that point in time, obviously your timely intervention has stopped me from making a really bad mistake and bricking my tablet.

As I said I have not had any problems with my W500 and it is as it was when it came out of the box minus the Office 2010, will this be restored when useing the restore discs?? and the anti virus program which I changed for Webroot, and I love it to bits.

First of all I would like to humbly apologise to Mr Sharanji Ally for addressing him wrongly and for doing so without invitation, also to the rest of the community for my faux par. My son phoned me and told me off for my bad manners, he is a regular visitor to forums and knows what is allowed and what is regarded as bad protocol, I am hoping that as its my first venture into this world you will be kind enough to forgive me.

He said that its a well known problem that recovey discs, that are not the ones sent with the device may not work properly so whilst it is adviseable to purchase them not to be supprised if they fail, so as a stopgap it would be best to clone the ssd via my laptop to a removable drive and keep it just in case the discs do not work.

Again many thanks for your kind help and for taking the trouble to answer my question. Whilst my problem is not fully resolved at least my fears are somewhat appeased.
