I have an old laptop (Aspire 5520) and the DVD is failing. Can I replace it with a non-Acer DVD?

I bought my Aspire 5520 at the end of 2007. Now sometimes it won't play anything. Currently the laptop doesn't even recognize that it is there any more. There are no Acer parts for this any more. I don't want to buy someone's used old DVD from their old Acer since it will just fail like mine.

So, can I replace it with an non-Acer DVD/CD player/recorder that will just slide into the slot and work? I don't know yet where to buy something like that at a store around here. But if it will work then I will go look for one off the shelf somewhere.

Will it work or are Acer laptops set up to only fit an Acer DVD/CD player/recorder?

    Hello MikeInIN,

You'll find below the part numbers of DVD drive for Aspire 5520:

    KU.00805.043 - DVD/R/RW.S-MULTI.DVR-KD08RS

The price is about 45€. You can research resellers with a search engine (the bold characters are the part numbers).
