Keyboard gives wrong characters from standby / hibernate

Dear All,

I have an Acer Aspire V5-471. It's fully updated with Windows8.1 and all subsequent MS updates.

The problem is that sometimes when bringing the computer out of standby / hibernate, the keys generate incorrect characters. This is a major problem when trying to enter my logon password.

I thought it might be a hardware or driver issue and checked the keys and uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers, all to no avail.

I then logged in with another account and that worked fine, I swtiched to the first account and that then worked fine until I put the computer to sleep (closed lid). When it happened again, I just switched user, switched back and it was OK again in the first account.

So it seems going into standby/hibernate somehow corrupts a user account keyboard assignment.

Has anyone else ever had this problem? I've searched the site and cannot find any similar occurrences.

Thanks

Chas.

Did it have this problem before you upgraded to Windows 8.1?

If you plug in an external keyboard, does it have the same problem?

I've never heard of this problem. Maybe try restoring back to factory settings?  If that doesn't work, I would call Acer to see if they can replace the keyboard.

No it never had this problem until recently.

I found this article from a search:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-security/why-cant-i-sign-into-windows-8-with-my-microsoft/7662ea57-c321-4bfe-84e9-fc9ebb87a44b

Seems to be a microsoft issue with keyboards.

If I try to log in I get password incorrect.

I click the back to the switch user screen then click my login and can log in OK, so it seems when brining the computer out of standby, the KB is being seen as the wrong one for the hotmail account, going to the switching users screen seems to correct it.

I'll try the suggested SYSTEM RESTORE to the last point and see if that fixes it.

Yes indeed, a system restore back a month did the trick. Further updates installed OK and still the laptop now allows correct login every time, from standby or hibernate.

    So problem solved. ;D
