Problems with Aspire 5742g

Hello All,

I'm in need of assistance.  About three days ago I was having issues with my Laptop freezing and not working properly.  I did a reboot from my Window 7 disk.  Now I'm having issues with my internet screens randomly closing down,  my mouse pad will freeze up as well, and not being able to install any of my devices on to my laptop.  I know that the cords for everything are good because they work in other computers.  I also have reinstalled all of the driver downloads avaiable on the Acer Website.  If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this I would appreciate the help.

Sincerely,

Jessica

I have a 5742 and have been through it...a lot. I take it you're running W7. What happens

when you go into safe mode with networking ? Does the unit still act up ? Does the

pad work when the unit is on DC or battery power ? The 5742's and 5750's are known

to get hot. Does the unit start acting up after sitting overnight [letting it cool down]

or does it work fine until it starts to get hot ?

Another thing I would do is see if you have a root kit/boot kit virus.

Start it up in safe mode with networking. Once you get to desktop, type

in MSCONFIG. You'll see a window pop up with MSCONFIGURE.EXE.

Click it and a window will open up. Look over to the right until you see

START UP. Open it up and look at all the boxes rhat are checked.

Look for strange files that end up with UNKNOWN and un check the

box. I do this for EVERY box that doesn't have a C:\WIndows\System32\etc.

    Every other box gets unchecked.

Click APPLY > OK > RESTART and let the unit boot up in standard mode

and tell us at your convenience, what happened. Did things work better ?

No change ? Things got worse ? I'll be honest with you, more times than

not, it's a hardware issue. Anywhere from an overheating core chip, to

a hard drive messing up, to RAM messing up, etc. At least that's what I've

    found on some Acer lappys.
