Acer Aspire V5 black screen

Hi guys,

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere and please feel free to direct me to another topic if this has already been covered.

I'm trying to sort out a recurring problem with my girlfriend's laptop. It's an Acer Aspire V5, model no ZHG running Windows 8.

The problem is that it boots up to just a black screen with the cursor dimly visible (this is after the initial Acer logo screen). I've got it to load up this time by holding Fn + F5 and then pressing the power button, and then it loaded up Windows fine. My question now is, is there anything I can do within Windows to stop this happening again? Is it that the notebook's somehow fooled itself into thinking it's attached to an external monitor?

Thanks all. Why they're running WIndows 8 on these little notebooks is beyond me, it just seems to be too much in too little space and prone to knocking itself into system meltdown.

First, check and, if necessary, tweak the display settings in Control Panel.

Can't find any diaply settings that seem relevant! It's not set for split-screen across two monitors or anything.

Spoke to Acer technical support and they recommended a full restart to factory settings. Seems a bit dramatic.

Agreed. That's why you wanna look for ways of doing it from inside Windows.

Did you look inside the advance settings button or on the side topics? Also, what does the Fn+F6 toggle do for you?
