    Hello karenc,

Have you tried with an external monitor on VGA port?

<Fn>+<F5> Switches display output between the display screen, external monitor.

    LAN/VGA combo port:

Makes it easy to get online and plug in an external display, from one place.

The provided LAN/VGA combo cable is hot-swappable so you can plug it in and

out even when the notebook is on.

Give me the exact model of your laptop.

Just went thru the box - didn't recieve a LAN/VGA combo cable.

Is this something I will need to do every time?  Doesn't make sense if so.

    Thank you.

    Hello,

When you say "screen just goes black after start up", I suppose you don't see the Acer screen.

In first, you can do this procedure (Sharanji):

    To perform a power reset:

    1. Unplug the AC adapter from your notebook.
    2. Turn the notebook over to remove the battery. Turn the notebook back over and open it.
    3. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds, then release the power button.
    4. Turn the notebook back over and slide the battery back into place.
    5. Slide the lock tab back into the lock position.
    6. Turn over the notebook one last time and plug in your AC adapter.
    7. Turn on your notebook.

    It doesn't work:

Your laptop is equipped of Acer converter port(not lan/vga combo). To connect to an external monitor or lcd/led TV, you need a Acer Mini CP to VGA Converter (NP.OTH11.00B) and a VGA cable. Actually, it's cheaper 10$ only. Of course you won't use it often. It's neccessary to determinate the problem.

    NP.OTH11.00B

You have processor AMD A10-5757M with AMD Radeon HD 8650G. The graphic chipset is integrated to the motherboard.

    So the default can be:

    1. Nothing display on the screen and the external monitor ---> AMD Radeon HD 8650G is dead ---> Motherboard must be changed.
    2. Nothing display on the screen but you have a signal on the external monitor ---> LCD/LED Touchscreen and/or the vga cable (between the motherboard and the lcd/led panel) must be changed.

    Note:

If you're not "technician", it's better to contact acer authorized service center.
