W700 Bizarre wifi issues

Hey guys,

So I just got my W700 (without warrenty) and am experiencing the oddest symptoms I have ever faced in a computer. I am a power user and am used to troubleshooting issues for friends and family. With that said, here we go:

Wifi Selectively works

Problem: I am able to get an IP address from the router(s) but I am not able to reach the internet. Some routers DO work with the W700 but EVERY router (different physical wifi locations) I have tried does work with my macbook, android phone and netbook (win8.1). The problem seems to be with the W700 and the routers. Oh the most interesting part? Google ALWAYS works.

Gmail, google search, google docs, voice feature, cached google pages... ALL WORK. But the moment I try using a VPN, ssh (using a program), ping another site, ftp or anything else, every app claims it has no internet. The Wifi icon occansionally goes to "limited" but not always.

I updated to windows8.1 and have performed every update via Windows-Update to try to solve the problem. The problem has existed straight out oft he box (wiped clean with the recovery disk) so I have not seen it any other way. Upon looking at Ipconfig, I have a IPv4 address. When I ping google, it pings the ipv6. If I disable ipv4 or ipv6, google stops working and the problem gets worst.

Drivers tried:

Qualcomm Atheros

3.0.1.155 (default, upon removing immediately comes back)

10.0.0.251

If anyone knows how to solve my problem it would be greatly appreciated!

You might check to make sure some malware hasn't added a proxy server that's blocking DNS. First verify you can turn off a proxy if one is enabled, then use nslookup from a command prompt to verify that DNS is working.

I typically walk up the network layers when it's not working... Does it have a valid IP address? Does it have a valid default gateway? Is the gateway reachable with a ping? Does it have valid DNS server addresses? Will they resolve a URL? Is there something blocking or redirecting port 80? Etc...

I don't think it's malware. This is a fresh install from the Win8 disk immediately having problems out of the box. (using the 8.0 disk included in the box, which is technically a recovery disk for this make and model).

I do have a valid IP address from the router, as for the default gateway, I am not sure. DNS is resolving a URL if the URL is google.com. If it is anything else it does not resolve. How can I check if it is redirecting port 80?

That is why I also tried FTP, my VPN and SSH (using Putty, software for ssh on windows) as to try different ports. None seemed to work.

From a command line 'ipconfig /all' will give you most all you would need to know about you internet connection. Paste it here in code mode if you have any questions.

Control Panel; Internet Options; Connections; LAN Settings tells you the status of a proxy. You shouldn't have one unless you have a pretty weird setup.

C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts is a system file that might have the Google stuff in it. Entries in the hosts file trumps DNS lookups.

Sorry for the late reply, I wanted to make sure the problem was solved.

I reverted the driver back to factory default (no updates from ACER, the driver that comes with the install CD)
I then disabled "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" under "Power Management"

That is all I did and the problem seemed to go away 0_o
