Has anyone tried Guruaid.com services to solve computer issues?

I purchased an Acer netbook 2 years back. Last week I had some hardware issue, so I went to their support centre. They said that my hard disk is about to crash, but they are unable to back up some of the data. Some of my important documents are on the hard drive and I need them urgently. While searching online for help, I find this company named GuruAid, which solves computer issues. Has anyone tried their services? Can they help me to get my data back?

If your computer is still working it could either be a
    a) Hardware issue
    b) Software issue
If you’re able to access your system (It will probably be a software issue), try repairing your hard drive using the CHKDSK command. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265#top
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.

    2. In the Open box, type cmd, and then press Enter.

    3. To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, at the command prompt, type chkdsk volume:/r, and then press Enter.

    4. You will receive the following message: Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

    5. Type Y, and then press Enter to schedule the disk check. Then, restart your computer to start the disk check.
If it’s a hardware issue, and you are unable to access your computer or backup some specific files, it means that the sectors on the hard drive where those files are saved, or at least a part of them might be saved, are bad sectors. Bad sectors are areas on the hard disk that are not accessible for read or write operations. If that is the case, you might have to use a professional hard disk recovery service.

I must say "HDD about to crash" is a very weak diagnosis.

Noone in their right mind pays good money to someone offering a diagnosis like that.

I would take my notebook to someone who can provide a more comprehensive diagnosis & solution.

CHKDSK is a good start as long as the HDD is not in a critical condition.  Most the time it won't help if your HDD is too far gone.

I generally boot to a USB flash stick with explorer or acronis on it (whichever I pick up first) and load this up and copy over whatever I can.

Data recovery specialist firms will most likely be able to recover the lot if the HDD is able to initialise.

Best of luck with whatever route you take ! Smiley Happy
