I bought my niece an Acer notebook a year ago or a bit longer. Now it tells her the battery needs replacing. I think she used it on AC most if not all the time. Could this kill the battery? If yes,how should she use it? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide!

    Hi John

Yes, using the notebook almost exclusively on AC will prematurely kill the battery.

Sometimes, there will be a need to run for a while on AC - this is OK short term, but to keep the life of the battery, it needs to be used. So ideally, for a few days a month - run the battery down to around 25% then charge.

There's a lovely article about li-ion battery care here.

If she runs it off the AC a lot (As in a few hours on end) tell her to take out the battery when she does so, also another tip would be to only plug the charger in when the laptop drops below 25 percent.

I'd like to thank Penquin Jim for letting me know about that article. I'm sure to learn everything I need to know from it. Thanks Jim

Thanks a lot Lugman! Near as I can tell she's been using it for 2 years without ever unplugging the battery or checking the charge level. A week ago she mentions that the laptop is telling her the battery is no good.

So to summarise: nothing beats a good, long, healthy discharge at the start of each day.
