Help with "Recovery Your PC needs to be repaired..." for Aspire R7`

I bought an Acer Aspire R7 just before Christmas.  I booted up the machine today, and got this message "The Boot Configuration Data File is missing some required information.  File \BCD  Error code 0xc000000d"

I'm new to Windows 8, having using Macs for 10 years.  Now I see that I should have created a recovery disk.  I don't have one.  I see that I can buy an eRecovery option from Acer.

I have three questions?

1.  Why would this happen?

2.  Is the eRecovery purchase worth it, and is it likely to work?

3.  Is there another way to do this?  I have tried the keyboard commands listed on the web, and they don't work.

Thanks much!

    Hi dneunabe

When you say you've tried the keyboard commands, do you mean from a command prompt window (via a repair disk or Windows)? Basically, if you've tried to repair the BCD file (as shown here), and it is STILL not working, it might be an issue with your hard drive (or possibly a virus).

The eRecovery purchase is definitely worth it and will work. This will allow you to reinstall Windows back to the day you purchased your R7. It's great too, if the hard drive fails or you just need a fresh installation.

Have you tried ALT & F10 (to access the recovery partition) from starting up?

If after reinstalling Windows the issue remains, then it will be your hard drive at fault, and you will need to contact support for your region to arrange a repair.

Thanks much! The keyboard commands you more specifically describe are the ones I tried. I will order the eRecovery materials and post back with the results. Thank you so much for your help.

To summarize, it did work to order the recovery USB drive from ACER.  It was $40.00, but it did work.  I've now also made a recovery partition of my own.
