Touchpad functionality lost

I have an Acer Aspire E1-470P.

I recently had to restore my computer to factory settings to fix a separate issue. Then I upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1 Pro (which I had earlier). I'm not sure if it occurred right when I upgraded, but I noticed the extra functionality of the touchpad (two finger scrolling, swiping between apps, etc.) that worked fine before (and worked in Windows 8 after restoring my laptop) was no longer working.

In device manager, it just shows a generic PS/2 Mouse. I came to the Acer site and found my model laptop. Three drivers were available: Synaptics, ALPS, and ELANTECH. I could not remember what was installed by default, so I've tried installing all three, one at a time. I noticed no change after any of them, and there is still only the PS/2 Mouse in my device manager, even after restarting.

I can move the cursor and click on the touchpad to click, it's just the extra functions that I'd rather have.

Any ideas on how to fix this? It's very frustrating not being able to scroll how I'm used to.

Go to Control panel, in Program look for ETDWare, Synaptics or Alps, install the drivers from Acer site, reboot, then go to Control panel, Hardware and sound, click Mouse and change the settings.

I have none of those things under Programs, this is all I have since I restored to factory settings (although, as I said, the touchpad worked perfectly when it was Windows 8):

Google Chrome

Intel Graphics Driver

iTunes

Microsoft Office Pro 2007

Regardless, I have tried installing all three and have seen no change in my Device Manager or Mouse settings after rebooting (PS/2 Mouse is all that is available, no touchpad).

You could try uninstalling Acer Launch Manager in Programs and Features, download V8.00.8101 from here:http://www.acer.co.uk/ac/en/GB/content/drivers and see whether it fixes the problem.

Bit of a pain but a relatively simple solution. You were half way there judging by your first post.

In device manager double click your ps/2 mouse to get the properties window.

Go to Details Tab.

Use Property dropdown box to get Hardware Ids.

If Value is ACPI\SYN1B4B then its a synaptics touchpad

The information in the Hardware Ids section will provide you with either an obvious answer OR you will need to plug the data into www.pcidatabase.com to get the manufacturers name, be it Alps or Elantech also.

Once you definitely know the manufacturer you can update the driver manually (since you tried the standard installer and it did not work) from the properties window of your touchpad in the device manager.
