S3-391 (Win 8.1, 128GB SSD) won't boot from Ubuntu Live USB

I'm trying to do something very simple - namely boot my S3 from a Ubuntu Live USB. I've created several bootable USBs using LiLi & Ubuntu 13.10 and tested them on another system (a Win 7 desktop without UEFI) and they work fine. However, when I try and boot from them on the S3, I just get a loop where the Acer boot logo appears, the screen goes black and the logo reappears until I remove the USB and Win 8.1 boots as normal.

So far I've tried disabling Secure Boot, I've changed the order of boot devices, and tried booting both with and without the f12 menu enabled - I get the same behaviour whatever I try. I haven't tried switching from UEFI to Legacy Boot as I only want to try out Ubuntu, and don't want to lose access to Win 8.

Has anyone managed to get this machine to boot from anything other than its internal SSD? Any advice gratefully received.

    Hi Verlaine1979

Something, I've not tried myself, but see here for help. It also mentions turning off fast boot, so give that a try too...

I disabled fast startup already (people also mention fast boot as a UEFI setting, but I don't actually see any such option in Insydeh20 when I look). No luck at all unfortunately.
