My Tablet is 'cooking' MicroSD cards

My 11 month-old Iconia tablet seems to be running so hot that it's cooking SD cards.

I have replaced 2 x 32Gb cards - they just failed without warning, but this happens.

I dropped in a 16Gb card - this too failed.

But I noticed that where the heat is worst at the back of the tablet is where the card port is.

Why would the machine be getting so hot at that point.

I now have a Samsung 32Gb Class 10 card there ( I want to shoot a bit of video) but every time I open a video player I have to unmount/remount the card OR ....

If I'm copying a file from a USB drive to the SD card I get a "operating drive unavailable' message and have to unmount/remount the card to copy data to it.

I'm sure that the deadheads of Acer aren't going to bother reading this post, it will probably be moderated for insinuating that the company staff who are assigned to read this forum aren't that well-trained but I'm hoping another user has encountered this behaviour and has a suggestion that might help.

I mean 3 cards failing seems to indicate a design flaw maybe when the machine was developed they didn't test that there might be a hot spot.

Anyay - thanking you in advance

It would also help if we knew which tablet model you have. I've got a 64GB in my A100 and have had no problems. It'd also be of potential benefit to know how you typically use you tablet, plugged in running graphics intensive games or unplugged browsing Facebook?

To be fair, every tablet I've ever had or worked on heats up to some degree, all you need to do is check any of the various tablet forums to confirm this. You mention the trouble that you are having with a Samsung card and I know that there are some issues with Samsung cards not working well with all tablets. You don't say what make the two 32's are but I guess that you know that there are a lot of dodgy and counterfeit cards doing the rounds, I always use either Kingston or SanDisk, bought from a reputable retailer, never had any trouble with either and I recommend them to friends. Not sure if this helps you at all but the cards could be the issue, rather than the tablet.

The device is an A700 running (the now outdated) Android 4.1

It isn't plugged into anything and recently has been only used as a media consumption device (music/videos) where the data is stored on the external card but I can't see why I'd be getting the "operating device unavailable" message when, according to my Advanced Task Killer app there's only the email application and the file manager running when I try to copy data from a USB flash drive.

I'm aware that this tablet (and justa bout every other tablet except for an iPad can get 'warm' but this gets hot

I don't want to wait until after the warranty expires before it burns something out in itself neither do I want to keep paying $40 a month to feed MicroSD cards into it.

Yes, sounds like it would be a good idea to contact Acer... Just be aware they are going to want to have you perform a full reset as part of the diagnostic process, so make sure you have your data backed up and know which apps will need to reinstalled. I'm not familiar enough with the A700 hardware, but typical problem points for heat are the battery and the graphics chip.

I've done the full reset AND the clear proivate data dance before posting my question here.

I have no confidence in Acer responding to any request - I have repeated questions from last July remaining unanswered (yet curiously marked SOLVED)

It's almost as if they don't care and are just winding down the clock until the warranty expires

Remember that Acer doesn't officially respond to anything here. They take 'community' support seriously. The only way you can get official support is through the customer service process. When an Acer employee responds to something other than forum structure and such they're doing on thier own.
