My daughter purchased an AO725-0687 Netbook from Walmart. She did not back up her operating system. Her hard drive failed (WD 320). I replaced it with an exact copy of the same model. We obviously do not have a copy of Windows 8 to put on the computer because it does not ship with any backup cds but has a separte backup partition on the harddrive to restore all settings. Problem being when the hard drive crashed we lost the backup. I have an extra copy of Windows XP I would like to put on it so at least she can use her netbook for school work. I can not find the drivers or chipset drivers for this product. It has an AMD Dual Core Processor C70 on an AMD A68M board.

Thanks for any help to links for chipset drivers or other solutions. I have tried over 18 different drivers online and none work.

I should add I was able to make a USB boot drive to install Windows XP. I have tried AMD's website for the chipset drivers and it says ACER will have to provide it. Windows installed no problem once I switched the Bios to Legacy.

I see that XP drivers are not available for this model on the Acer website.

If you use BelArc advisor (free) you can see the devices which are in your laptop, and if you can find another laptop which uses the same devices you might be lucky to find one that was made with XP so you could download the drivers from their website (HP, Dell etc.). But it would be very difficult for the graphic drivers, since the video card is on the motherboard.

A very easy solution would be for you to buy the Acer reinstall flashdrive, it will reinstall your laptop just like when it was new, but it costs about $44 plus shipping. You can buy it by calling Acer customer support, sales dept.

In XP, is your display working OK? if so, then you could get a quick solution on connectivity by buying a USB wifi adapter, which will come with its drivers.

Or... quite possiblyk, everything might work out the box if you boot Lubuntu from a flashdrive etc.

I strongly advise you not to install XP on a Windows 8 computer, because the hardware is incompatible. At the very best, you will get a poorly running machine. I advise you to take it back to Walmart for a refund. If your Walmart warranty has expired, it needs to go back to Acer.

have given up on putting XP on this machine, and have decided to try giving her my copy of Windows 8. That isn't working so well either...

Courage, Stvn. Can you get into Windows 8 at all? If you can, it isn't hopeless.

You have deleted all your drivers and are now running on generic drivers. Set your laptop to do automatic Windows Updates and leave it alone for a few hours.

Then go to IObit.com and install their free download updater, but SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT FIRST. There still could be problems, but over time, your laptop's performance will steadily improve.

If it were mine, this seems like the best solution. Re-insert the crashed drive and take it back.
