I have this Acer laptop that was given to me because it would freeze at random times for no reason. So first thing I did was check the ram I sapped out the 2X2Gb sticks there where in it and booted it up still would freeze for no reason. I then updated the BIOS. And again still freezes.  I have no idea why it keeps freezing I tried swapping the hard drives out but every time I go to install windows 7, XP, 8, 8.1  It just freezes at different spots some times it will get half way other times it lunches the Installer then stops. It is the Acer 5741-3541 i5 2.4Ghz 320Gb Hard Drive 4Gb Kingston ram Intel graphics.

Weird thing is I can install ubuntu and run it.

    Hi Shawnthefurry

Usually, freezing can be a sign of a bad driver or even a motherboard issue. But it runs Ubuntu OK? Is this as a "live" disk or a full installation? If it does run without any problems, it will be best to use it as a Linux machine.

If, it eventually freezes with Ubuntu, then I'd guess the mobo is at fault!

Hello and it is a full install ubuntu 12.04 LTS hase a few crahses here and there but 13.10 runs no problem no crashes any thing. so i have no idea what would cause it some people said that there's was a heat sensor that cause the freezeing.

Possibly, although normally a PC will shut down when it overheats - perhaps the sensor itself is at fault?

Maybe do you think it could be a cpu problem? because for linux to run no problems but windows not to? I just have no idea what is going on. i tested just about every thing on the laptop from ram to wifi card cd/dvd drive and same thing. maybe it is some weird thing with the mobo but why linux.

I don't think its likely to be the CPU, otherwise the same would happen with Linux. I'm really at a loss to what the problem could be. I'll see what results I can come up with.....

    It's a puzzler!
