Acer Aspire 5733Z - optical drive not recognized

My name is Bob and I'm a new member as of Sunday, January 12th (2014). Before introducing myself in this message I stumbled upon someone needing help transferring data from an XP machine to a Windows 8 machine. I supplied two possible ways for him to do what he needs to do. I enjoy helping when I can.

I've joined the forums because I need help too! My wife has an Acer Aspire 5733Z-4633 laptop. Somewhere along the line she downloaded something and it caused Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit to stop seeing the internal optical drive. I've tried restarting (rebooting) to see if that would help but it didn't. While the unit was still under warranty I tried working with Acer Chat support but was not able to get a working solution. So now that the unit is out of warranty I tried to use the Acer eRecovery utility to reload the OS and save files to a backup folder. However, after the backup was completed, the reload of the OS was started but encountered an error to the point that the error message says to restart the installation. This can't be done because a restart of the laptop just causes the process to end up with the same error and there's no way to get back to the original eRecovery utility. By coincidence I do have a MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit installation disk. I'm hesitant to use it unless I absolutely have to. Am I stuck having to start from scratch with my disk with a valid installation license?

Please advise and many thanks!

OK, Bob, I think we may be able to eliminate some things to determine what's going on.

Is the optical drive seen in BIOS?

I'm going to assume that at this point, you are unable to boot into Windows, at least in normal mode.
Have you attempted to boot into Safe Mode?

If you are able to get into Safe Mode, can you see/eject/use the optical drive?

Have you attempted to use the ALT + F10 recovery method?
