Aspire 5600u rear USB issues

I have a USB mouse and a PS2 keyboard with a USB adapter.  Some strange behavior:

With both hooked up to rear USB slots the mouse is recognized at startup but not the keyboard.  If I remove the keyboard and then re-plug it in, it becomes recognized.

With the keyboard hooked up to a side slot and the mouse hooked up to a rear slot the keyboard is recognized but not the mouse.  If I re-plug the mouse, then it is recognized.

With both on the side slots it works fine.

How can I get the rear USB slots to work properly?  The wireless peripherals work fine but I would prefer to use my own and I want to use the rear slots to reduce clutter on my desk.

Thank you.

Do you have a USB keyboard that is not using the PS2 adapter? It could be the adapter causing the issue. Also, have you tried other USB devices, to see if the ports act the same?
