Acer D257 start up issue /black screen

I have a problem with an Aspire One D257 which so sounds similar to other posts on this site. The machine sounds like it is going to start up but all I get is a blank screen. The difference from other reports is that my screen is backlit and there is a non-flashing underscore cursor in the top left hand corner. Can anyone tell if this is a BIOS issue and the steps I need to take to fix it.
Thanks in anticipation.

The "blinking cursor" is an indicator that you may have a hard drive or hard drive controller issue.

Are you able to see the hard drive in the BIOS?

Hi Tommy, sorry for the delay, I was expecting to get an email prompt when I got a reply so I hadn't checked the forum. The cursor in the top left hand corner is steady, NOT blinking.

Not sure what you mean about seeing the hard drive in BIOS, when I switch the machine on I don't see anything on screen other than it's backlit and a NON blinking underscore character visible in the top left hand corner.

    Regards
    Malcolm

Do you hear any beep codes when powering up?

No, can't hear any beeps, just the sound of something spinning for a short while, several seconds.

If the system is not proceeding through POST and you are unable to get into the BIOS, you should probably call your local Acer service center for assistance.

Hey Tommy, I have a similiar issue with my Acer One D257-13608. When I start it, it goes to blank screen with flashing cursor. I can get to the InsydeH20 Setup Utility. But I'm not aware of what to do. Can you or anyone help me with any suggestions?

    Newtothis,

Since you are able to get into the Setup Utility are you able to see the HDD model name? Also use your right arrow key to tab over to the Boot tab and do you have anything listed next to HDD0?

    For example:

    Hitachi HTS543232A7A384

If you can see the HDD then you can try reloading your Acer computer with recovery media but if that fails, I would suggest contacting your local Acer service center for assistance. If you do not see your HDD this would indicate a hardware failure and would require repair.

The HDD model name listed is:  WDC WD3200BPVT-22JJ5T0 and listed next to HDDO is: WDC WD3200BPVT-22JJ5T0.

I do not have recovery media. This is my 14 year old niece computer and I'm trying help her with it.

And thank you for your help.

Newtothis---assuming you can see a logo screen, you can try one of the alternative recovery techniques (alt + F10 logo technique) found here for this Acer model.
