Acer H7531D projector suddenly dim - even after brand new bulb

Last week I was using the projector when I noticed the image became suddenly and dramatically dimmer, similar to when a screen dims for power saving mode, except I was in the middle of watching a movie. This dimmed image persisted across multiple video inputs, and affected the projector menu itself, so I know it was a projector issue and not the video source(s). We didn't get any message regarding the system overheating, and it didn't fully power itself off, so I don't think it was a cooling issue.

After I powered the system down for about half an hour I turned it back on and found the image back at full brightness. My bulb was at about 4300 hours, which was 300 over the projected lifespan for that bulb, so I ordered a brand new bulb which I have just installed. When I first powered on the projector, the 'ACER' splash screen came up nice and bright - but within a minute or two the image had gone dim again. After twenty minutes fiddling with settings in the projector menu (i had to stand within five feet of the screen to read it in a darkened room) I gave up, powered the system down, and began composing this message. Just before posting, I turn the system back on and got the full brightness of a brand new lamp.

Has anyone else experienced this before? I'd like to figure out why this keeps happening so I can prevent it in the future.
