acer netbook freezes during startup

I have an acer aspire one netbook that freezes during startup.  I can get to the Windows XP screen but the system gets stuck at that point.  I have tried utilizing the eRecovery Management app during startup by pressing alt+f10 but this doesn't seem to work either.  Hitting those keys brings up a blank screen with a cursor and nothing happens at that point.

Any suggestions/help are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

CB77, I'm sorry that you're having this problem. The fact that your splash screen comes on shows that your BIOS chop, monitor cable, and monitor are working. The most likely cause of not going any farther is that you have a hard drive problem.

There is 1/3 of a chance that it is a software issue. Try to get into Safe mode and run a deep scan with your antivirus. Also, try to borrow a legal copy of your operating system and insert it into your optical drive and reboot. MAYBE it will take you to a repair menu.

There is a 2/3 chance that it is a hardware problem, and you will need to take your rig to a shop. Before you do, take a look at the prices on new laptops, because if your hard drive has failed, it might not be worth the cost of repairing it.
