Travelmate 5730 Windows 8.1 Installation Problem

I have a TravelMate 5730 running Windows 8 and have attempted to update to Windows 8.1 and failed miserably on at least nine occassions. On reboot I receive the message that it couldn't update to Windows 8.1 0XC1900101-0X20017. I have been on the Microsoft Support Site and in accordance with their advice updated all my drivers, checked that all Windows updates were installed, checked system files for corruption and tried a clean boot - each time I had the exact same message on reboot. I have even rebuilt my laptop so that only Windows 8 was loaded this also produced the same message. The only thing I seem to be left with is updating the BIOS from V1.32 to V1.34. I have tried to do this but for some reason it keeps being rejected. Do I need this update to make Windows 8.1 work? If not has any one else encountered the same problem and have a way forward? Is Windows 8.1 worth the effort?

Hi Malcolm!

There are a few reports that, not everyone can successfully upgrade from Windows 8.0 to 8.1. This is due to changes Microsoft have made within 8.1.

Until there is a work around, why not continue with 8, and use (if you don't already) a start menu replacement like Start 8 (Not free, but great), Start Menu 8 (Free) and Classic Shell (Free)?

I had a look at Windows 8.1 in Currys the other day and wondered why I really wanted it as I am now reasonably familiar with Windows 8 and do not have ma ny problems with its use. So I'll wait until Microsoft sort it.

Malcolm, you're a lucky man. Other people have installed 8.1 and had all kinds of problems that we can't solve. If you install a new operating system (such as 8.1) you lose all your Acer drivers. You can probably find them on the Acer site and re-install them, but what if your laptop doesn't work without them and then you can' install them? Plus, the order in which drivers are installed sometimes makes a differece.

8.1 rejected your laptop because it is incompatible. Certain types of CPUs that support 8 very well do not support 8.1. When scanning your system, 8.1 found incompatibility problems and stopped you from having a disaster.

You got off a lot easier than some other people who have written in for help.

Vince - you're absolutely right!

It's a pity Microsoft can't do more testing, or at least try to iron out more bugs before they release an update. I know computers vary widely, but at the end of the day, it's the consumer who suffers!
