Acer Aspire 5735Z local only internet connection

Hi Guys,

My laptop kept overheating and crashing, so I fixed that problem by cleaning out the fan. However now it is no longer crashing it is running very slowly and there is only a local only internet connection. The windows diagnosis doesn't know what the problem is, and the signal strength is good/very good, my tablet and my girlfriends Mac connects fine and mine used to so I don't know what the problem could be. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

If you know when it stopped working, you can attempt to Rollback to a point in time just before it stopped.

Otherwise, it may be quite difficult to determine what is keeping it from working.

As you've stated it works in Safe Mode, it's not a hardware issue.

I usually suggest that in this case it is easiest to restore the system to factory defaults, to eliminate any software issue.

This would necesitate that you backup any personal data on the system.

How did you 'clean the fan' ?

If you opened the system, it is possible that a board and/or connector has come loose.

Yeh the fan was completely blocked up by dust so I did have to open up the system and unscrew the fan. Do you know what it is that could have come loose that would affect the internet connection?

I would check the antennas for the WLAN board and make sure it's properly seated in the socket.

    Hi Tommy,

Thanks for the advice. I've had a look at the wlan board and honestly can't see anything out of the ordinary with it (u can see a picture below).

Any other ideas would b much appreciated!

    Thanks

OK, if the connections and seating of the card are fine, you would need to look at anything software that would keep you from connecting.

Can you provide the specific error or message that you are seeing when attempting to connect?

What IP address is the WiFi getting?

Have you attempted to remove / reset and WiFi connections?

Ok. One funny thing is that when the computer first starts up the blue circle on the network symbol is there suggesting it is connected to the internet but if I try to actually use the browser it stops working. However even when the blue circle is on it says it has limited ipv6 connectivity

I have just found that the internet works fine when I start the computer in safe mode with networking! Does that explain at all why it isn't working normally?

The 192.168 IP address is a normal IP address coming through DHCP on the router, so that's good.

If you're working under Safe Mode ... then that points to a software issue in Normal Mode.

What was updated around the time that this stopped working?

After I fixed the fan issue when I was first using the laptop I was told by my Avast antivirus program that a lot of programmes needed updating.

It looks like there were some updates for:

Security updates for Microsoft .NET framework 3.5 and 4

    Adobe reader X

    Security update for Microsoft office

    Security update for windows

Thanks again for the suggestions Tommy. In the end I downloaded a programme from Malwarebytes and that solved the problem. Looks like I had some dodgy adware on the system that was slowing everything down. So thanks a lot.
