Win XP KAV60 recovery fails

I've got a Gateway KAV60 that the XP recovery disks fail on. Gateway doesn't support the KAV60 any longer on their site, so I thought I'd try here.

The recovery proceeds well, but the last, Updating, part completes instantly, which I think means the drivers are not installed. Subsequently, after the XP logo the machine shuts down. None of the Safe Modes work, neither does VGA.

I'm using Acer recovery disks. I ran them twice and this happened both times. Then I went into the BIOS and switched to IDE mode. Boot still crashes. And now when I attempt another recovery, the two options are greyed out, I can only exit.

Not sure where to go from here. Thanks.

Welcome aboard, Paul. There are a variety of causes for your problem, but here are some likely ones.

If you can't get past your splash screen, then your hard drive has probably failed. I'm not sure how you were able to get Acer Recovery Disks, but they are designed for one specific laptop only, and they cannot work on a different one. Microsoft licenses the software on the recovery disks, and each one is specific to one model laptop.

Considering the age of your laptop, and the fact that a new, more powerful laptop can often be bought for $200, I would not spend any money trying to repair it.

Thanks for your reply. I did test the drive, at least with the short self test, and it passed. I doubt it's that. I strongly suspect this is a driver issue, especially with the last leg of the recovery not proceeding correctly.
