Acer B276HUL ymiidprz monitor AND 15" rMBP resolution question....

Hi all, 

 

Very excited about a great deal i got on the 29" IPS Acer B276HUL ymiidprz monitor. 

 

Received it today and am in the process of testing all the configurations to make sure it meets my needs.

 

My question for the community.....

 

I've currently got the Acer B276HUL ymiidprz hooked up to my 15" Macbook Pro with the 650M 1gb Video Card, but am unable to get a resolution better than 1920x1080. 

 

I bought this monitor specifically to get the advertised 2560 x 1440 resolution. 

 

Any ideas how to get the desired resolution? Should i use HDMI over DVI-D? Should i use my rMBP in clamshell mode?

 

Am i trying to do the impossible?

Looks like a fine monitor / good choice - though you do mean 27" (not 29"), right?

 

With a recommended resolution of 2560 x 1440, you should've made sure that the display adapter (graphics card, integrated CPU, etc.) could easily display that, all things considered - which I think might be your problem. After some quick research, the 650M supposedly boasts 3840x2160 max resolution, but that's likely with one screen under basic operating requirements. You are however essentially running two screens, as well as trying to set the resolution of the second to something higher than what the first is likely rated for, which is very taxing. Also, if you're planning on running anything that requires significant graphic requirements (video games, etc.), you'll likely receive another limitation to your max resolution. Personally, I'd be very happy with 1920x1080 until you upgrade to a better computer, though I completely understand any lingering disappointment. Concerning your queries:

 

• I would definitely suggest HDMI over DVI - usually wouldn't matter that much in most cases, but this isn't most cases, and HDMI is generally considered superior.
• I would definitely suggest using clamshell mode, as that will relieve the GPU from having to power two displays, as well as likely making the resolution options easier - though it may get confused when backtracking.
• I don't think you're trying to do the impossible - certainly improbable and unlikely, but not impossible.
• ***Be very aware of how hot your rMBP gets with the 27" monitor plugged in - if it gets too hot, discontinue immediately and find alternate cooling methods***
