Acer 810 W3 Windows 8.1 HID and Camera drivers

I've popped Windows 8.1 on my lovely W3 but the orientation sensor and the camera don't work.

Device Manager says that the HID Sensor Collection couldn't start (error code 10 - Failed to initialize sensor from HID collection descriptor)

The camera application fails saying that there is something wrong with the camera.

Does anyone know where I can get the proper drivers? Windows Update reckons I'm already using the latest ones and I've donloaded the ones from Acer support.

Hi. Thanks for that, but it doens't seem to have made any diffrence I'm afraid.

The screen rotation still doesn't work, neither do the Windows 8 camera or music or video apps. And I can't restore the original Windows 8 distribution beause the restore disk doesn't work either.

Not very impressed with Acer just at the moment.

Hi. With Regards to the screen rotation, there is a registry key that can be changed, located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AutoRotation

the value of enable needs to be changed to 1.

I can only guess that the drivers are provided as part of the Intel chipset package.

    Hope this helps you.

Hey RobMiles, I actually had the same problem with mine. They sent me replacement restore disks which didn't work either. So now I sent it to them for repair. We'll see how that goes!

    Hi All.

For an update, I have now been able to get my w3 working completly with windows 8.1 inlcuding the camera and auto rotation.

I had to recover my unit back to windows 8 first with the media, the software did not auto install but i was able to get the OEM folder and therefor all the drivers i needed to install, following on from which i was then able to update to 8.1 with everything operational.

I'm finally a happy bunny. The sequence I followed was to do the re-install from the media up to the point it failed and then install the two driver kits from Acer support. First the old version and then the one released recently (version 2).

You can then edit the registry to remove the failing part of the OEM Upgrade (search the for the name of the failed program and remove both keys with it in).

That seemed to make the sytem into a working 8.0 machine with the rotation drivers properly installed (they don't appear if you do a cold install of 8.1). After that I installed around 45 updates and then used Windows Store to fire up the 8.1 upgrade whch ran successfully and left everything working. I've lost the Office install, but fortunately I'm in a position to put the full version of office on my machine and that works fine.

The only problem is that the graphics driver crashes every now and then when I resume from sleep, but this doesn't bother me that much as it doesn't ever take the machine away from me.

The hardware is excellent for the price, and the battery life is stunning. Just a pity that the Acer support (Hellooooo...anyone out there?????) is a bit lacking. Having a forum is useful, but the occasional guest appearance from an Acer person would be nice. If only to sympathsise and tell us that a fix is on its way.
