Aspire 5750G USB 2 ports stopping during use

Hi,

I appear to be having a problem with the USB ports on my Aspire 5750G notebook, I have an external mouse plugged in to one of the post most of the time and for the last few days it works fine when the machine initially boots up but then after a random amount of time, normally an hour or so, the mouse will just stop responding.

The mouse is still getting power, because the light is on.

I can still see the mouse as connected in the control panel, I can even see it still connected to the USB hub in control panel.

If I remove the mouse I get the normal 'you've removed a usb device' noise and the same if I plug it back in again.

If I plug it in the other USB 2 port it still doesn't work, though it is detected, light comes on, 'device plugged in noise', etc.

If I plug it in to the USB 3 port it works fine.

I have checked the power settings and turned the 'USB Selective Suspend' settings to 'Disabled'

I have checked the device setting in Control Pane' and changed the 'Generic USB Hub' power management settings to not allow the computer to power the device off to save power.

If I reboot the laptop then the ports will work again for unspecified amount of time.

Please help this is VERY frustrating.

Hi Sellwood,

Quick question. Are you using the mouse when it stops working? That is to say you're not leaving it alone for an hour and then it goes to sleep? Frankly I might just suggest doing a recovery to see if that solves your issue. This way you would know 100% if the issue is software or hardware related. Also, would you happen to have another mouse you can test out? Or would you be able to borrow one / buy one for the sake of this test and return it?

Yes I am active with the mouse when it stops working.

I have tried different mice, and none of them work once the first has stopped. I don't think it is the mouse at all I think it is the USB ports/hub as both the USB 2 ports stop working at the same time, and any device plugged in to them does not function afterwards, and I can swap the mouse with the keyboard, that is plugged in to the USB 3 port, and the mouse will then work and the keyboard won't.

The laptop is my work PC with a lot of application and data installed on it so I wouldn't like to do a recover or rebuild until it is the last option because it will really time consuming and annoying.

Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Still time consuming but less so than doing a recovery, you could delete everything under USB controllers in the device manager and reinstall via Windows update to see if that corrects the issue. Frankly it seems like a driver or Windows error as a hardware error would be pretty unlikely given the fact that a simple restart takes care of the issue.

Already tried that, doesn't seem to have made any difference.

I agree that is sounds like a driver or windows issue, but it is proving really hard to pin down.

The mouse/USB port worked fine from 8am until nearly 6pm today before it gave up the ghost, and a simple reboot fixed it again.

I'm fully up to date on Windows updates and have used the Acer updater which says I am fully up to date too.

I hate to say it but you've tried everything else. The only thing left would be to do the recovery to rule out any Windows errors. You could always download a linux live DVD and run that to see if you still have the issues. It will run off of the DVD so you aren't at risk of losing any files. If you do that and you're still seeing the failure you know that the issue is 100% hardware related. If not you know it's either a misconfigged driver or a Windows error. It's not a terribly hard process to do, I use tails for these type of tests. Quick download (~900MB) and not as bad as resetting Windows for nothing.
