Help! Laptop constantly stops charging!

Hello, I have an Acer V3-551G-8454 and I've had it for less than a year. My problem first started when it would randomly stop charging plugged in then I would take out the charger and replug it in then all would be well again, but when weeks past by things got worse and worse... even when I take out the charger and replug it into the hole it wouldnt charge I would have to play around with the cable to readjust the powerline or whatever you would call it and it would be very frustrating to keep that line of power flowing... so I'm wondering is there any fix to this? I read on a dell forum some person had a similar issue and they told him that the charger line or something got worn out so the DELL bios or something couldnt read it anymore or something? Any help will be appreciated!

Hi unfoldstory!

Two possible problems are:

1. The charger is faulty/has a loose connection - see if you can borrow another, but make sure it is the same input/output as your adaptor otherwise you could do more damage. Check the label on your adaptor for the ratings against the borrowed one.

2. The socket on your laptop is loose

Either way, it looks as if it needs to be repaired (thankfully under warranty, as it is less than a year old).

Finlux is exactly right, however you should keep in mind that it's not uncommon for Acer techs to determine that loose sockets fall under Customer Induced Damage and not cover the repair under warranty. I would suggest you call Acer directly and tell them your unit is having charging issues. Ask them to send you a new charger (free of charge under warranty). Test it out and if it works great! If not you'll need to have your unit repaired.

Thank you finlux and acer representative! and I was wondering if its the standard warranty you get from buying the laptop do you get the charger for free? I live in Hawaii and I'm in college right now so I have bunch of my school work saved onto this laptop. and if I sent it in for repair it might cause a bit of problems for me. My charger is wiggling a bit I have to say. What do you guys think I should do?

Quick note, I'm actually not an Acer rep, just a friendly Canadian who enjoyes lending a helping hand. And normally yes you would be able to request a replacement free of charge. Just call the support line and tell them you believe your charger is dead. I personally wouldn't mention the loose port until you've received your new adapter just in case.

And you're right, sending it in will likely result in a wiped HDD, meaning losing your school work.

snaps... Well I just ordered the adapter.. Is it possible the adapter might fix the problem? I can't even find the prongs out of place inside the charging socket LOL

I had a very similar problem with a previous laptop, also had a friend with the same problem. All I did was remove the battery, and reinsert it, problem solved instantly. I told my friend about it, and it worked for him also.

It's entirely possible that a new charger will solve your issue, and to randombystander's credit I hadn't even thought of pulling the battery. It's helpful if the problem is power board related. This usually would straighten things out and it's easy enough you'd be better off to try it out. If both of these don't help I would suggest that you contact Acer and tell them what's going on. While it is possible that a tech will decide the issue is customer induced damage, they're usually very fair and I wouldn't be surprised if they repair it under warranty regardless.
