Acer Ferrari 4000 Screen blank.Rest OK.

Hi. New member. Old machine. Old OS too. [ XP...Yes, I know !] The laptop screen has died. It works perfectly through the external VGA port. I've tried a different [ working] LCD panel, and a new inverter, but still nothing.

But as the External VGA port is getting the correct signal the problem looks like being in the output section of the circuit to the built in display panel. I've had the whole thing totally apart a couple of times now, but am loath to give up on it.

[That's one of my many problems !!]

I'm in the throes of buying a new machine with 7 or 8 on it anyway, but would still like to get to the bottom of this if I can.

Any ideas ?

As far as eight year old rigs go, yours is a monster. I don't understand your statement that it works fine through the VGA port. What works fine through the VGA port?

You seem to have gone pretty far in trying to repair a very nice-looking machine. You could try a computer repair shop. You might have to settle for an external monitor. And I wouldn't give up on it. That rig has too many high-quality parts. You could try searching the web for similar models to get the monitor. I have seen the Ferrari 5000, a more expensive version of your rig.

Hi. Thanks for your comments. When I said it works fine thrugh the VGA port, I meant that if I plug an external Monitor into the VGA port, then everything else it working well. Even the wireless BB, etc etc.

I am an electronics engineer, but mainly Telecom equipment rather than Laptops.

I'm actually thinking that the problem may be on the MB system board output. Obviously it's not the Graphcs chip, or the External Monitor wouldn;t work. I've tried a new Inverter, but no difference. I've tried another LCD Panel with it's own Inverter from a known working Acer Extensa 5220 Laptop, which has the same 20 Pin [ i think] connector, but no joy there either. Unfortunately the 5220 has now been too robbed of parts for me to try my Ferrari 4000 panel on it, whch would have been a great help !

With regard to looking for another 4000 LCD panel, I'd be quite happy to do that, once I'm sure that it is the panel, but at th moment I'm not convined that it is.

I;ve been searching on the net for ways to test an LCD panel without having to buy expensive equipment, but no luck really. There are lots of posts from people with similar problems, but very few answers !! [ Sounds like a song, somehow !! ]

Thanks for your interest, and if you have any other ideas, please let me know. I'm not desperate to get it going, as I do have a lot of machines around, and wth the low cost of storage these days, I always take 3 backps of all data onto 3 different 2TB drives nightly. But I like the Ferrari, and it's become a bit of a challenge !! Crazy, eh ?
