Volume & light bars missing from screen also battery meter icon missing from bottom bar - Aspire

Hi,

I am new to the forum.  I have an Aspire one (cannot find any other model number on it and it is running Win XP.

There used to be a black bar which would appear on the screen when I increased or decreased the volume or the light.  It had white bars (I believe) that would show how loud or soft the volume was or how bright the screen was when I was changing them with the Fn & appropriate other keys.  I can still change the volume and the light, but can no longer see the level.

At around the same time the icon to show how much time is left on the battery also disappeared from the bottom bar right.

I need to find out how to put these 3 items back on the computer.  What did I do to screw it up?  All my other laptops (various manufacturers and vintage) have these items and I need them back.  I need to make sure the volume is off on my laptop before I go to work as the sound of the laptop booting is a problem where I work and I need to be able to check how much time is left on the battery while I am working as I cannot plug in and must finish on the power I have.

Thank you for any help anyone can provide.

    Hi meryl

Check your startup entries. Usually these bars are provided by a program that runs on startup. Use MSCONFIG to access your startup programs or even Ccleaner.

Make a note of any startup entries that are unchecked. You may need to Google the entry, if you're unsure of what it is, but don't worry, Google will tell you!

Once checked (and applied), restart your machine & all should be well.

If for some reason, the entries have been removed altogether, go to the Acer Drivers & manuals site, enter your laptop details & download them.

Why they have gone in the first place? Has anyone else been using your laptop? Finally, if all else fails, try a system restore back to a date when you knew all was working....

I will have husband try this.  I use the Acer for work and only other one to use it is husband and that is rarely as it is a small screen.  I have no idea what happened to the bar displays.  When I push the (slide) button to shut off the Internet connection attempt (no Internet at clients and the search kills the battery) it no longer displays the symbol showing that I am shutting same off either.  I started noticing that all of these went missing and went poking around to see what I could find and asked husband (he is better at dealing with all of this than I am, although in college he used to copy my computer programming homework - in the mainframe days) and he had no idea.

Sorry for not get back sooner.  I use my older Sony laptop in the kitchen as a kitchen computer (it has a bigger screen than the Acer) and had signed in and left the post with same.  It burped or something and rearranged and lost some of my bookmarks, including this one and this was the first chance I had to search the history and find the site again.

    Hello again meryl

Hope all goes well. If for whatever reason your husband cannot fix it - then the only other surefire way is to completely restore Windows using the built in recovery partition see here for more information. Just make sure you back up all your data beforehand!
