My  A500 syncs fine to my desktop via the micro USB , so that USB works, but when I plug any peripheral into the standard USB, like a thumb drive or printer, I can't access it.

You will generally not be able to connect a USB printer to an Android device, as there is no way to install drivers for the printer.  It is suggested to use Cloud Print for Android devices.

External media connected to the system should be FAT or FAT32.

I understand about the printer.  The response did not address the thumb drive, which is a FAT32 device.  What kind of memory devices can be connected via the USB port?
