Transferring Camcorder Footage to Laptop

HI,

 

I have a video camera (Canon Mini DV 205) that I want to transfer the video footage to my computer (it is on mini DV tape not card). I bought a IEEE 1394 - 4 pin to USB 2.0 cable thinking that would work but it hasnt. 

 

My computer is ACER V3 - 571, running windows 8 64 bit.

 

From googling around I see it may be because the computer doesnt recognise IEEE 1394 firewall. 

 

How do I get the computer to be able to accept the camcorder? e.g. can i make it use IEEE 1394, if not, how else could i transport the video footage into the computer
